In Indiana, the county Sheriff is generally responsible for registering, verifying, and monitoring convicted sex offenders and violent offenders. For statewide continuity and consistency, all sheriffs maintain their registry within a centralized database at www.sheriffalerts.com.
Sex Offender Registration Requirements
Sex or violent offenders must report to the Sheriff of the county they are residing in upon their release from incarceration within three (3) days (72 hours) or seven (7) days depending upon their classification.
A sex or violent offender must also register, with the local Law Enforcement having jurisdiction of their registration, within three (3) days (72 hours) of any changes of principle address, education, job, internet email addresses, instant messaging, or electronic chat room username, and or social networking website that the registrant uses or intends to use, any vehicle he or she uses or intends to use, and any other information required by the agency.
A sex or violent offender must also register all of their physical identifiers, including aliases, tattoos, scars, and piercings. Any name changes must also be reported.
The Sheriff’s Office takes the registered information from the sex or violent offenders, who must submit said forms in person, and updates the Indiana Sex or Violent Offender Registration, the National Crime and Information Center, the Indiana Data Communications System, and the local Record Management System. The submitted Sex or Violent Offender Registration form is then securely stored by the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office must verify the authenticity of the registered information at least (1) time a year or every 90 days depending upon the risk classification of the registered offender.
The Sheriff’s Office must also notify the sex or violent offender by an approved office mailing, informing the sex or violent offender of his or her duty to report in person and register either annually or every 90 days depending upon the risk classification.
The principal address of a registrant is where he or she spends the most time. This applies to whether it is owned or leased by the registrant or another person.
Any person who is homeless or claims to be residing in temporary or transitional housing must register every (7) seven days.
Any falsification or omission of information from the registration is a direct violation of The Indiana Sex or Violent Offender Registration.
