Confinement Officer Application Process
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) application process for the position of Confinement Officer begins with a pre-qualifying test administered by the Administration Division. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office requires all confinement officer applicants successfuly pass a Corrections Officer Selection Test to ensure that only qualified individuals are hired. The Corrections Officer Selection Test measures basic skills such as reading comprehension, problem-solving, and report writing.
A Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office offers the Corrections Officer Selection Test by appointment throughout the year and is administered at the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters.
On the day of the written exam, applicants must provide valid, government-issued identification (driver’s license, military ID, etc.). Additionally, candidates must submit a completed application before being permitted access to the test. No late arrivals are permitted access to the testing room on the test day.
Upon successfully achieving a 70% or higher on all sections of the written exam, the Sheriff, Sheriff’s Executive Staff (the chief deputy and majors), as well as Jail Division Command Staff will interview candidates. The Sheriff’s Office maintains test scores for three (3) years.
After the interview and as Confinement Officer vacancies occur, a conditional employment offer may be extended to qualifying candidates. Once a conditional offer of employment is accepted, the background investigation process begins. The background investigation consists of a drug screen, physical examination, fitness test, psychological evaluation, and a lie-detector examination. If an applicant is not selected for a vacancy, the application will be purged after three (3) years.
Candidates who pass all phases of the conditional job offer will be scheduled for a pre-employment meeting in which they will be informed of hire date.
