RELEASE NUMBER: 2023-NR-0904
CONTACT: Lt. Erik Nilssen
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson

On September 04, 2023 at approximately 7:44pm deputies with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters with the Scott Township Fire Department (STFD) were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident with injuries on I-69 near the 18 mile marker in the northbound lanes.

Scott Township firefighters arrived on scene first and located a white 2018 Toyota Corolla with heavy front end damage in the median and a gray 2002 Mercury Sable with heavy rear end damage in the roadway.

STFD medics and sheriff’s deputies checked on the status of those involved in the crash and determined that one of the occupants died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. As a result of the crash, traffic from I-69 North-bound was diverted onto Boonville-New Harmony Rd by troopers from the Indiana State Police. The crash resulted in the interstate being closed for over two hours

The drivers of both vehicles sustained minor injuries and were transported to local area hospitals for treatment. In accordance with state law regarding serious bodily injury or fatal crashes, drivers of both vehicles were read the Indiana Implied Consent Warning and offered a chemical test. One driver consented and submitted to the test while the other driver refused. A warrant was obtained, complelling the other driver to submit to testing. Results from both tests are pending.

This investigation is ongoing. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased once appropriate notifications have been made.
