AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson

An investigation is underway after an inmate at the Vanderburgh County Jail died on October 30, 2023.

A confinement officer assigned to Housing Unit B1 observed an inmate in distress. The officer found the inmate unresponsive in the cell. Additional officers, along with jail medical staff, were summoned to the housing unit. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was deployed, and officers began CPR. Medics from the Evansville Fire Department and AMR arrived to assist. At 09:45 AM, medics ceased resuscitation efforts upon orders from a physician.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the jail. As per Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office policy, even though no foul play is suspected, an outside agency will conduct an investigation of the death. The Indiana State Police will assume the lead investigative role, with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Section conducting an internal review.

The inmate was a 61-year-old male with underlying health issues for which he was receiving regular care. The Coroner’s Office will provide further updates regarding the identity of the deceased as well as the cause of death.
