The Evansville-Vanderburgh County Traffic Safety Partnership conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Thursday, August 29, 2024 near the intersection of E. The checkpoint ran from 11:00 PM on Thursday, August 29 until approximately 2:00 AM on Friday, August 30. A total of 131 vehicles were diverted from E. Morgan Ave. into the checkpoint. Four (4) arrests were made at the checkpoint including three (3) DUI arrests one (1) arrest for an active felony warrant. Several other drivers  admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages and were taken through standard field sobriety testing. Motorists who had been drinking were checked for signs of impairment and given the option to find alternate transportation if their breath alcohol content approached the legal limit.

Motorists who had not been drinking and were in possession of a valid license were back on the road in less than 90 seconds. Funding for local sobriety checkpoint operations is provided by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“Every DUI crash is a preventable tragedy. Alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination—all essential for safe driving. With a blood alcohol concentration of .08, the risk of a crash increases exponentially. By organizing these sobriety checkpoints, the Sheriff’s Office is working to keep our community safe and prevent these tragic incidents,” said Sheriff Noah Robinson.
