RELEASE NUMBER: 2024-NR-1031
CONTACT: Sheriff Noah Robinson
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
In an effort to enhance public safety on Halloween, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office conducted a verification detail focused on sex and violent offenders across the county.
Deputies spent the day personally contacting offenders at their registered residences or workplaces to confirm compliance with the legal requirements of those on the registry.
Verification Results:
- Total Offenders Contacted: 116
- Verified Offenders: 98 registrants were positively verified.
- Pending Verifications: 14 registrants were not reached and will be contacted today.
- Citations Issued: 1 registrant was cited with a misdemeanor for an I.D. violation.
- Failure to Register Reports: 4 reports of failure to register were identified and are now under investigation; felony charges may be filed as warranted.
The verification process involves deputies making direct contact with offenders to confirm the accuracy of information on file, which may include interviewing household or family members if the registrant was not present.
During the operation, the Sheriff’s Office received a tip that led to the arrest of an out-of-state offender with a felony warrant from Kentucky for failure to register.
Deputies located the suspect and took him into custody on his outstanding Kentucky warrant, and filed additional felony charges for failure to register in Indiana. The case has been referred to the U.S. Marshals for consideration of federal charges.
Sheriff Noah Robinson stated, “With over 400 sex and violent offenders to keep track of, the Sheriff’s Office devotes considerable resources ensuring these registrants remain compliant with their responsibilities under the law.”
