Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Struck Overnight on I-64

DATE: June 26, 2015
SUBJECT: Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Struck Overnight on I-64
RELEASE NUMBER: 2015-NR-039
CONTACT: Sgt. Jeff South
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Dave Wedding

On Friday, June 26, 2015 at 12:20 am, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of I-64 near the 21 mile marker. A truck and trailer belonging to Krutzer Construction from Bowling Green Ohio had broken down on the shoulder of the interstate in the eastbound lanes and was waiting to be towed. A semi truck and trailer belonging to Penske Truck Leasing struck the unoccupied truck. No injuries were reported, however both vehicles required towing from the scene.

Both eastbound lanes had to be temporarily shut down in order to tow a semi trailer. While blocking traffic, a Sheriff’s Office vehicle was struck by an approaching vehicle. Several tractor trailers had stopped in the right hand travel lane and had activated their hazard lights. A passenger car continued in the left lane and struck an unoccupied Sheriff’s Office vehicle which had its emergency lights activated.

The driver of the passenger car was cited for Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle and Operating without Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in either accident and no injuries were reported.
