SUBJECT: Man Arrested after Pointing a Gun at Deputy
RELEASE NUMBER: 2014-NR-076
CONTACT: Sgt. Matt Hill / Lt. Noah Robinson
AUTHORITY: Sheriff David Wedding

On Monday, August 25, 2014, a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy was working off-duty at the Washington Square Mall. The deputy observed a man, later identified as Mr. Jacob A. Beliles, jump over the counter of the closed Couzin`s Fish & Chicken restaurant and take two soft drink cans. When the deputy approached Mr. Beliles, he exited through the back door of the restaurant.

The deputy later located Mr. Beliles on Monroe Avenue east of the mall and approached him to take him into custody. While being handcuffed, Mr. Beliles pulled away from the deputy. Mr. Bililes produced a large caliber revolver and then pointed it at the deputy. The suspect then fled on foot with the deputy giving chase. The deputy utilized his taser and was able to take Mr. Bililes into custody. The handgun was recovered and determined not to have been loaded.

Sheriff Dave Wedding later stated, “I am relieved beyond words that our Sheriff’s Deputy was not injured. This suspect is very fortunate the deputy elected not to use deadly force, especially in light of the ample justification his threatening actions provided.”
