Vanderburgh County’s next Sheriff, Dave Wedding, announced today that he will appoint Major John Strange to serve as his chief deputy sheriff.

Major Strange, 52, is a life-long resident of Vanderburgh County, and he is a 27 year veteran of the sheriff’s office. He was promoted to the major’s rank under Sheriff Eric Williams in 2007, and he has been the executive commander of the Administration Division since then. The Administration Division is comprised of human resources, training, timekeeping, information technology and fiscal control. He also served as liaisons to both the merit board and to the county attorney’s office.

Major Strange holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Evansville, a Master of Science degree in Criminology from Indiana State University, and he is a graduate of the 200th Session of the FBI’s National Academy. He is a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association, a member and Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Evansville, and he is also an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech Community College, where he teaches in their criminal justice program.

Wedding said: “Having someone like John Strange at the sheriff’s office made my decision for chief deputy very easy. John is a very loyal member of the sheriff’s office with vast, administrative knowledge of sheriff’s office operations and executive leadership experience. The sheriff’s office is fortunate to have him and I am fortunate to have him stay on as part of my leadership team.”

The future sheriff and chief deputy will assume their new roles beginning at 4:00 p.m., on Friday, May 23, which is when current Sheriff Eric Williams’ announced the effective date of his retirement in order to take a position with Old National Bank.
