SUBJECT: Tractor Trailer Involved in Five Vehicle Crash on I-69

On Monday, September 14, at approximately 8:57 a.m., Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a vehicle crash with injuries on southbound I-69 near Booneville New Harmony Road.
Upon arrival, deputies located five vehicles involved in the crash, with a total of six people injured. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. All six injured individuals were transported by ambulance to local hospitals for treatment.
The preliminary investigation indicates that as vehicles were entering a construction area, a tractor-trailer was unable to stop and rear-ended another vehicle. This caused a chain-reaction crash involving several additional vehicles.
The driver of the tractor-trailer remained on scene and cooperated with deputies. He reported that he possibly experienced brake problems with the vehicle. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the crash at this time. However, all drivers consented to chemical testing in accordance with Indiana law regarding crashes involving injuries.
An Indiana State Police motor vehicle inspector is assisting with the investigation due to the involvement of the tractor-trailer.
