Bicycle Patrol Visits North Junior High School

North Junior High School teacher Mr. Mike Flake invited the Sheriff’s Office bicycle patrol to greet students as they arrived for class this morning.

Mr. Flake is a strong supporter of bicycle safety and provided “Kyler Strong – Wear a Helmet” wrist bands for deputies to pass out to students. 13-year-old Kyler Fairchild was seriously injured in a bicycle crash this past March, which motivated Mr. Flake to help get the bicycle safety message out to his students.

According to the United States Department of Transportation, 818 bicyclists died on U.S. roadways in 2015 (an increase of 12.2 percent from 2014 and the highest number since 1995). Bicyclists deaths represented 2.3% of all 2015 traffic fatalities. Almost three-quarters of fatal crashes (74%) involved a head injury and nearly all bicyclists who died (97%) were not wearing a helmet.

Please talk to your children about bicycle safety and ensure they wear a helmet before being permitted to ride.
