SUBJECT: Deputies Arrest Juvenile Suspect after Pursuit

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 17 year old juvenile suspect after a short pursuit. Deputies working overtime enforcement for aggressive driving and speeding in the area of US 41 near Waterworks Rd spotted a vehicle traveling North on US 41 at 64 MPH in a 50 MPH zone The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop in area of US 41 and Riverside Dr, but the suspect driver failed to stop and began to flee. The pursuit speeds ranged between 30-40 mph and ended approximately 3 minutes later in the area of Akin Park where the suspect fled the vehicle on foot.
Deputies set up a perimeter with the assistance of the Evansville Police Department (EPD) and a Sheriff’s Office K9 began tracking the suspect. The Evansville Police Department (EPD) also provided a Drone or Unmanned Arial Vehicle at the scene during the search for the suspect. After approximately 40 minutes of searching, law enforcement noticed a suspicious vehicle traveling around inside the perimeter that appeared to be lost or looking for someone to pick up, such as the suspect from the pursuit. The vehicle stopped and turned around several times and later turned into a nearby restaurant on Covert Av and US 41. The suspect vehicle was stopped and the suspect from the pursuit was located in the back seat of the vehicle where he was taken into custody by EPD officers.
The suspect identified himself as a 17 year old juvenile from Owensboro, KY. Deputies located a large amount of currency on the suspect, suspected narcotic drugs, and a digital scale. The juvenile suspect is being charged with resisting law enforcement, L6 felony, resisting law enforcement, A misdemeanor, Dealing a Narcotic Drug, L2 felony, Possession of Paraphernalia, B misdemeanor, and Operating without ever receiving a license, C misdemeanor. The suspect was later transported to a juvenile detention facility where he was booked on the above charges. This case is still under investigation and additional charges are expected at a later time.
Funding for the overtime enforcement that led to this arrest was provided the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) via by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. Deputies launched a speed awareness campaign, as a part of the Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP), beginning at 6 AM on today’s date which resulted in over 100 traffic stops, several arrests, and a large amount of citations and warnings for speeding as well as other traffic violations.
Presumption of Innocence Notice: The fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
