SUBJECT: Driver Arrested after Driving into Floodwaters while Intoxicated
RELEASE NUMBER: 2025-NR-0411
CONTACT: Major Matt Corn
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
On the evening of April 10, 2025, deputies with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding a vehicle stranded in high water at the intersection of Allens Lane and Eleventh Avenue. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a white Kia Soul submerged in approximately 3 to 5 feet of water with no one inside.
A male later identified as William Zentmyer was located lying on the ground near Allens Lane and Grove Street. Zentmyer admitted that the vehicle was his and said he had swum to his current location after getting stuck in the flood waters.
Deputies observed several indicators of intoxication, including slurred speech and difficulty maintaining balance. Zentmyer admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening. A subsequent certified breath test conducted at the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center produced a BAC of .134.
Sheriff Noah Robinson said, “Driving into flooded areas is incredibly dangerous and puts not only your life at risk but also the lives of first responders. Behavior like this diverts critical fire department resources. When alcohol is involved, the consequences can quickly escalate. We urge everyone to make smart decisions and never drive impaired or attempt to cross high water.”
