SUBJECT: Driver Dies in Crash after Fleeing Traffic Stop
RELEASE NUMBER: 2023-NR-0316
CONTACT: Major Matt Corn
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
On 03-16-2023, at approximately 11:17 AM, deputies assigned with the Evansville Vanderburgh County Joint Drug Task Force attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of the Lloyd Expressway between Stockwell Rd. and Boeke Rd. on a 2011 Acura. Deputies observed the Acura had an expired license plate and the registered owner of the vehicle had a suspended driver’s license and two (2) active misdemeanor warrants for their arrest. Rather than stopping, the driver of the Acura fled from deputies West on the Lloyd Expressway.
After traveling a short distance, the vehicle exited the Lloyd Expressway via the Willow Street exit and continued West on Division Street. The driver was unable to negotiate the turn at Division St. and Harlan Ave. and left the roadway striking the pedestrian overpass. The collision occurred at approximately 11:18 AM and deputies immediately requested medical assistance for the driver. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and emergency medical personnel with American Medical Response and the Evansville Fire Department, the driver of the Acura died from their injuries.
This incident is still under investigation at this time. The name of the driver will be released by the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office once all of the necessary notifications have been made. The Sheriff’s Office will be holding a news conference on 03-17-2023 at 11:00 AM to provide further information.
