RELEASE NUMBER: 2025-NR-0404
CONTACT: Captain Dave Guetling
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
An investigation is underway following the death of an inmate who was transported from the Vanderburgh County Jail to a local hospital on Friday, April 4, 2025.
The incident occurred in an eight-person cell located in Housing Unit A2, where fellow inmates reported that one individual appeared unresponsive. The inmate had apparently fashioned a ligature and applied it to his neck while his fellow cellmates were sleeping.
Jail officers and on-site medical staff responded and initiated life-saving measures, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Emergency medical personnel from the Evansville Fire Department and AMR arrived on scene and provided additional assistance. The inmate was then transported to the hospital emergency room, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office was notified and will release additional details regarding the inmate’s identity and the official cause of death following notification of next of kin and completion of their investigation.
In accordance with Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office policy, an external agency is investigating the incident. The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, while the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Section is conducting a parallel internal review.
The deceased was a 46-year-old male.
