Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Crash on I-69

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal, single-vehicle accident that occurred early this morning on I-69.  At 0526 hours, Deputies were dispatched to I-69 at Pigeon Creek near the 11.5-mile marker after a caller reported that a vehicle had left the roadway and driven into Pigeon Creek.

Sheriff’s Deputies and McCutchanville Volunteer Fire Department personnel responded and located the vehicle submerged in the creek under the Pigeon Creek Bridge.  The Evansville Fire Department Water Rescue Team was called to the scene and were able to remove the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.  The driver was deceased.

Detectives and Accident Reconstructionists from the Sheriff’s Office also came to the scene to conduct the crash investigation.  A witness observed the vehicle travelling southbound on I-69 when, for reasons unknown, it left the roadway and entered the median, traveling for over 400 feet.  The vehicle then went up an embankment going airborne for approximately 95 feet, before striking the ground and then entering Pigeon Creek.  The creek is approximately 27 feet below the level of the roadway.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office took possession of the body.  An autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon and the Coroner’s Office will release the name of the driver.  The crash investigation is ongoing.
