Sleepy Driver Crashes into School Bus

At approximately 7:09 AM this morning, deputies responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of Diamond Avenue and Mesker Park Drive. A 2003 Dodge Stratus, traveling westbound on Diamond Avenue, ran a red light at the intersection and collided with the side of an EVSC school bus that was southbound on Mesker Park Drive.

The driver of the Dodge Stratus, a female, stated that she had fallen asleep while driving, leading to the collision. Two independent witnesses also reported observing the driver appearing to fall asleep before the crash.

The school bus was carrying 9 students at the time of the incident. Fortunately, none of the students were injured, and they were safely transferred to another bus.

The driver of the Dodge Stratus was cited for running the red light. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages all drivers to remain alert and avoid distractions or fatigue while driving, especially near school zones and in high-traffic areas.
