SUBJECT: Suspect Arrested on Multiple Charges after Fleeing from Deputies
RELEASE NUMBER: 2024-NR-0111
CONTACT: Major Matt Corn
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson

On Sunday, January 7th, 2024 at 12:55 PM, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputies were patrolling the area of N. First Av and Meyer Av when a gray 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis was observed driving without a visible license plate. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver, explaining the reason for the traffic stop. The driver, Gary Brian Wilson, provided Deputies with an Indiana ID card and indicated that he did not have a valid driver’s license. Due to the unsafe positioning of Mr. Wilson’s vehicle in the lane of travel, Deputies instructed him to pull into an adjacent parking lot for the duration of the stop. Mr. Wilson made a U-turn and fled from Deputies at the traffic stop. Due to the high traffic conditions in the area, Deputies did not pursue him.

Later the same day, at approximately 1:23 PM, Deputies observed Mr. Wilson operating the same vehicle near the intersection of W. Diamond Av and Kratzville Rd. Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Mr. Wilson, based on the incident that had occurred earlier. Mr. Wilson again fled from Deputies. In an effort to evade authorities, Mr. Wilson began driving in a reckless manner, potentially endangered the motoring public. Due to Mr. Wilson’s actions, the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons.

A short time later, on Sunday, January 7th at 3:44 PM, Deputies again located Mr. Wilson operating the Mercury Grand Marquis in the area of E. Morgan Av and Read St. Deputies began observing Mr. Wilson from a distance and witnessed him pass a vehicle in a no passing zone near an intersection, disregard a stop sign, and travel left of center. Deputies then attempted to initiate a traffic stop when Mr. Wilson again actively fled from law enforcement. Deputies pursued Mr. Wilson but terminated the pursuit due to Mr. Wilson’s reckless actions after approximately one (1) minute.

On Wednesday, January 10th, 2024 at approximately 7:19 PM, Deputies located Mr. Wilson at a gas station near the intersection of N First Av and Uhlhorn St. In an effort to avoid an additional vehicle pursuit, Deputies set up surveillance on him. As Mr. Wilson exited the business to approach his vehicle, uniformed Deputies in fully-marked patrol cars moved in and “boxed in” his vehicle. Despite commands to stop, Mr. Wilson began fleeing on foot and attempted to run back inside of the business to evade capture. Deputies were forced to tackle Mr. Wilson to place him into custody. A search incident to arrest of Mr. Wilson resulted in an additional charge of possession of marijuana.
