SUBJECT: Good Samaritan Loans Deputy Bicycle to Pursue Fleeing Felon

A Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office deputy recently took a citizen up on an offer to borrow their bicycle in order to chase down a fleeing felon.
On Monday, April 23, 2018 at approximately 10:00 AM sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a wanted person inside the Vanderburgh County Courts Building. Mr. Jonathan Adams was wanted on an outstanding probation revocation warrant issued by Vanderburgh County Superior Court. Prior to the deputies locating him, Mr. Adams ran from the courthouse. Mr. Adams ignored commands to stop and deputies gave chase on foot.
At the corner of Locust Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard a good samaritan noticed the chase and offered to loan Deputy Ryan Barrett his bicycle. Deputy Barrett (who was in “Class A” uniform which includes a tie) took the citizen up on their kind offer and began peddling after the suspect. At the corner of Cherry Street and S.E. 10th Street, Deputy Barrett and a responding Evansville Police Department officer converged on Mr. Adams and took him into custody.
Mr. Adams was transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail without further incident. He was booked on charges of Resisting Law Enforcement. His probation revocation warrant stemmed from a 2014 arrest and subsequent conviction on charges of Conspiracy to Deal Cocaine as a Class A Felony.
Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and Evansville Police Department are fortunate to enjoy a high level of community trust.” Sheriff Wedding added, “The fact that we have citizens willing to help us when we really need it speaks volumes about our community’s faith in their law enforcement members.”
