On Friday, June 20, 2014 Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Ms. Maria Cristina Stevens on charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated causing Death as a Class C Felony.
The arrest stems from a single vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at 9:29pm at New Harmony Road just west of Koressel Road (Press release #2014-NR-050). Mr. Ronald Boback, who was killed in the crash, was originally thought to have been the driver of the vehicle (a silver 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck).
An investigation revealed that Ms. Maria Stevens (who initially told deputies she had been a passenger) was in fact driving the vehicle when it left roadway and flipped several times. Mr. Boback was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.
Hospital testing later revealed Ms. Stevens had a blood alcohol content of .12 grams per deciliter (.12%). The legal limit in Indiana is .08%. Ms. Stevens was lodged at the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center and awaits her initial court appearance.
