At approximately 5:15 p.m., Deputies responded to a call for assistance from the Indiana State Police who were pursuing a vehicle into Vanderburgh County from Posey County. Deputies pursued a black 2004 Dodge Stratus driven by Kameron Smith (DOB 08-08-98) who had an active felony warrant for Resisting Law Enforcement and Possession of Methamphetamine. Prior to today, this suspect had been previously pursued in a vehicle on May 16, 2021 for the active warrant. The pursuit had been terminated on that day due to safety reasons and the officers were unable to capture him at that time. Today’s pursuit began to due a tip the Indiana State Police received in regard to his location.
The pursuit continued to the west side of Evansville and stop sticks were utilized on Buchanan Road, however the vehicle continued. In the area of Diamond Avenue and Heidelbach Avenue, the suspect began driving eastbound in the westbound lanes. Due to this high risk behavior, Deputies immediately terminated the pursuit.
A short time later while Deputies were patrolling the area, the suspect vehicle fled from an alley northbound on Sherman Avenue. While north on Sherman Avenue, the suspect vehicle struck a patrol car which was westbound on Stanley Avenue.
After the collision, the suspect fled on foot. The Deputy involved in the crash pursued the felon on foot and utilizing his Taser, was able to take the suspect into custody.
Both the suspect and Deputy were transported to the hospital for medical evaluations due to the crash. The suspect was checked and released from the hospital. He was later transported and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. Please see affidavit for charges.
Thankfully, the Deputy was treated and released without injury.
