Owners of Keys Contracting Arrested for Fraud

DATE: October 11, 2024
SUBJECT: Owners of Keys Contracting Arrested for Fraud
RELEASE NUMBER: 2024-NR-1011
CONTACT: Sheriff Noah Robinson
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson

An investigation by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office into allegations of home improvement fraud has resulted in the arrest of Jacob and Brooklyn Key, owners of Keys Contracting.

The investigation focused on contracts entered into by several Vanderburgh County residents for the repair of storm damage sustained on or about April 2, 2024.

The victims reported significant damage to their homes caused by fallen trees, leading them to make substantial down payments to Keys Contracting, totaling approximately $178,114.55. Although some work was completed on the residences, the quality of repairs were inadequate and, in one instance, in violation of the Indiana Building Code.

The investigation revealed that the contracts provided by Keys Contracting did not meet the requirements outlined in the Indiana Contract Code (IC 24-5-11-10). Furthermore, the work commenced prior to obtaining necessary building permits and insurance authorization, preventing proper inspection by the Evansville Vanderburgh Building Commission.

As a result, the victims now face the additional burden of hiring legitimate contractors to correct the faulty repairs and complete the necessary work on their homes. The Building Commission is assisting in gathering further information regarding Keys Contracting’s license status and the work completed on the affected properties. In addition to filing police reports for fraud, each victim has initiated civil suits against Keys Contracting.

Sheriff Noah Robinson stated, “The Keys exploited homeowners in vulnerable situations, preying on their urgent need for assistance. My Office is committed to taking a strong stance against those who break the law to profit from the misfortunes of others.”

ARRESTED:

Jacob Andrew Key, 33, of Evansville. Fraud as a Level 6 Felony (3 counts)

Brooklyn Deshae Key, 27, of Evansville. Fraud as a Level 6 Felony (3 counts)

Presumption of Innocence Notice: The fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
