On Tuesday, July 29th at approximately 4:25 PM, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Vanderburgh County Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Big Cynthiana Road near Estate Drive.
Upon arrival, deputies observed two vehicles with significant front-end damage: a blue Chevrolet Tahoe and a grey Toyota Tundra. The Tundra had caught fire following the collision. The driver of the Tundra was able to exit the vehicle before the fire spread. The driver of the Tahoe required extrication by personnel from the Vanderburgh County Fire Department.
Both drivers were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe later died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
A crash reconstructionist responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. As required by Indiana law in all crashes involving a fatality or serious bodily injury, the driver of the Toyota Tundra will undergo a chemical test. While the results are pending, alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected as contributing factors at this time.
Big Cynthiana Road was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after proper notification has been made.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident.
