SUBJECT: Three Arrested for Armed Robbery
RELEASE NUMBER: 2026-NR-0630
CONTACT: Lieutenant Matt Schnell
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
On June 9, 2026, the Street Crimes Unit began investigating a reported armed robbery that occurred in the 200 block of Mulberry Street.
The victim stated that he had arranged to meet an individual he met through social media to complete the sale or trade of a shotgun. Upon arriving at the meeting location, the victim met with three males, later identified as Malik Detavion Jackson, Steven Lynn Harrell Jr., and Byron Dale Slaton. The victim alleged that he was held at gunpoint while his phone and shotgun were taken. All three suspects then fled the scene on foot. The victim stated that he did not know the names of any of the suspects or the exact location where the robbery occurred.
Detectives utilized FLOCK License Plate Reader technology to determine the general area where the robbery had taken place. They then canvassed the area on foot and located several privately owned security cameras. During the investigation, detectives obtained surveillance footage showing the suspects entering the victim’s vehicle and, minutes later, running from it carrying what appeared to be the victim’s shotgun. Detectives also located video footage showing all three suspects entering a residence in the 700 block of Southeast Third Street. Using this footage, detectives identified all three suspects and observed Harrell carrying what appeared to be the victim’s shotgun.
The Street Crimes Unit later located Jackson and Harrell in Evansville. Both were arrested without incident and charged with Robbery and Theft of a Firearm.
Slaton was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force in Hartford, Kentucky, on June 29, 2026, and is currently awaiting extradition to Indiana.
The Street Crimes Unit consists of detectives from the Evansville Police Department and deputies from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office. They were assisted in this investigation by the Vanderburgh County Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC), the local office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the United States Marshals Service, and the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office.
“Bringing all three suspects into custody took the coordinated effort of local detectives, federal partners, and the U.S. Marshals,” said Sheriff Noah Robinson. “Technology like our Flock cameras gave us a solid starting point, but teamwork saw this investigation through.”
