SUBJECT: Deputies Investigating Fatal I-69 Crash
RELEASE NUMBER: 2026-NR-0704
CONTACT: Major Matt Corn
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on the evening of July 3, 2026, on Interstate 69 near South Green River Road that resulted in two fatalities.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., deputies, along with officers from the Evansville Police Department and conservation officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries on northbound Interstate 69 near the South Green River Road exit. Upon arrival, deputies located two individuals in the roadway suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries.
Personnel from the Evansville Fire Department immediately provided lifesaving measures to both individuals; however, both were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a motorcycle traveling northbound on Interstate 69 was involved in a single-vehicle crash. A passing motorist stopped to check on the motorcycle rider, activated his vehicle’s hazard lights, and exited his vehicle. A third vehicle, also traveling northbound, reported moving into the left lane to avoid the stopped vehicle with its hazard lights activated. That vehicle subsequently became involved in a secondary collision with both the motorcyclist and the driver who had stopped to render aid.
Sheriff’s Office crash reconstructionists and detectives responded to assist with the investigation. A deputy certified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluated the driver of the third vehicle. Although drugs and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors, a blood sample was obtained and will be submitted to the Indiana State Police Laboratory for testing, as is standard procedure in any crash involving serious bodily injury or a fatality.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation. The crash resulted in the closure of northbound Interstate 69 for approximately 3.5 hours. The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased at a later time.
