SUBJECT: Driver Arrested After Crashing Stolen Vehicle
RELEASE NUMBER: 2020-NR-007
CONTACT: Major Mark Rasure or Sergeant Korey Chapman
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Dave Wedding
Shortly before midnight yesterday evening a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a silver 2007 Mercury Montego for a moving violation in the area of N Saint Joseph Avenue and Saint Joseph Industrial Park Drive. The driver of the vehicle decided to flee so the deputy gave chase. The driver fled at an extremely high rate of speed and weaved into the oncoming traffic lane without any regard for the safety of others. Based on the circumstances at the time the Sheriff’s Office decided to terminate the pursuit. Shortly after the pursuit was terminated, another deputy observed the suspect fleeing on foot from the vehicle after it crashed in the area of Mohr Road. A Sheriff’s Office K-9 was deployed and tracked the suspect who ultimately surrendered upon hearing the warnings from the K-9 handler. The suspect, Jamaine Sanders, 24, of Evansville was taken into custody without further incident.
While deputies investigated the pursuit, the Evansville Police Department was investigating a domestic battery that occurred earlier in the 900 block of Line Street. During that investigation officers identified that Jamaine Sanders had allegedly assaulted the victim before stealing their vehicle, a silver 2007 Mercury Montego. Sanders was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance before being transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail for a list of charges including: resisting law enforcement, auto theft, robbery, and domestic battery.
Imaged above is Jamaine Sanders, 24, of Evansville
The fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
