SUBJECT: Deputies Ramping Up Seat Belt Patrols Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend
RELEASE NUMBER: 2025-NR-0513
CONTACT: Major Matt Corn
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Noah Robinson
In preparation for Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer travel, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office will be increasing patrols as part of the national “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign. From May 17 through May 31, deputies will join law enforcement agencies across Indiana to promote seat belt use and safe driving habits.
This effort is part of a nationwide initiative funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI). Deputies will be taking a zero-tolerance approach and issuing citations to drivers and passengers who are not properly restrained.
“The safety of our community depends on small choices made every day. Choosing to wear your seat belt is one of the most important and easiest decisions you can make,” said Sheriff Noah Robinson.
According to ICJI, 93.6% of Indiana drivers use seat belts, but safety officials stress the importance of reaching the remaining drivers who are not buckled up. Seat belts reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by up to 65%, and unrestrained occupants face a much higher chance of being ejected during a collision.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office urges all drivers and passengers to buckle up—every trip, every time.
