Fourth of July Weekend Activity

This past Fourth of July weekend was a demanding time for local law enforcement. Nine motorists were booked into the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center on charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated. As of Sunday night, area law enforcement had arrested 67 individuals over the extended weekend. The most common charges (other than OMVWI and Failure to Appear) were seven arrests for Public Intoxication, six arrests for Domestic Battery and four arrests for Methamphetamine related offenses.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated three crashes resulting in injury, one of which was a motorcyclist who sustained serious bodily injury after striking a guardrail on State Road 65.

The holiday weekend proved to be a deadly one for Indiana law enforcement. Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “The shooting deaths of Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Perry Renn and Gary Police Officer Jeffrey Westerfield are a stark reminder that the cost of putting on the uniform can be high.” He added, “Our hearts are with the family and friends of these fallen heroes.”
