15-year-old Killed by Train

DATE: Wednesday, August 12, 2015
SUBJECT: 15-year-old Killed by Train
RELEASE NUMBER: 2015-NR-053
CONTACT: Lt. Noah Robinson
AUTHORITY: Sheriff David Wedding

On Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 7:12am the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Kratzville Road and Mill Road upon report of a pedestrian having been struck by a locomotive.

A CSX locomotive reported striking a pedestrian while traveling south on tracks that run adjacent to Mill Creek Estates near Mill Road. The pedestrian was reported to have been walking south on the tracks towards Mill Road prior to being struck.

Sheriff’s Office investigators and crash reconstructionists, the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office and the CSX Police Department are investigating.

Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “A 15-year-old Central High School student lost his life this morning after being struck by a train. This tragic event is compounded by the knowledge that this death was entirely preventable.” Sheriff Wedding added, “The locomotive crew sounded a horn and began emergency braking well in advance of the collision, but the pedestrian was apparently unable to hear the approaching train over the sound coming from a pair of ear buds. Please talk to your children about the dangers of trespassing on railroad property as well as the importance of avoiding the distractions of portable electronics.”

The identity of the deceased has been confirmed and will be released by the Coroner’s Office later today.
