On Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at approximately 5:00am the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of W. Boonville New Harmony Road and Gilles Lane upon report of a pedestrian struck by a pick-up truck.

On scene investigation and statements taken from the driver indicated that a maroon Ford F150 pick-up truck had been traveling east on W. Boonville New Harmony Road before striking a pedestrian. The driver reported that he had looked down prior to the collision after dropping a can of tobacco. The pedestrian was jogging west on W. Boonville New Harmony Road prior to the collision. The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Pursuant to state law regarding crashes involving serious bodily injury or death, the driver of the pick-up truck consented to a post-crash blood draw. The incident remains under investigation.

KILLED:

Janet Sue Gries, 51, of Evansville.

DRIVER:

Coleman Matthew Sheridan, 22, of Evansville.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this release incorrectly stated that the driver reported that he “retrieved a can of tobacco from the floor of the truck prior to the collision”. The driver actually reported that he looked down after dropping the tobacco can.
