SUBJECT: Driver Trapped Underneath Vehicle after Waterworks Road Crash
RELEASE NUMBER: 2017-NR-020
CONTACT: Lt. Noah Robinson
AUTHORITY: Sheriff David Wedding

On Friday, February 24, 2017 at 9:22 AM the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to Waterworks Road between US 41 and LST Drive upon report a rollover crash involving occupant ejection.

Upon arrival, the responding deputies learned that the driver had been thrown from her vehicle and then entrapped underneath as her SUV rolled on top of her. Good Samaritans pushed the vehicle off of the driver.

On scene investigation and witness statements indicated that a maroon 2006 Pontiac SUV driven by Tydiesha S. Dejarnett had been traveling westbound on Waterworks Road when the vehicle left the north side of the roadway. The driver then overcorrected and the vehicle ran off the south side the roadway and overturned. The vehicle rolled over at least twice, ejecting the driver in the process. The vehicle came to a rest on top of the driver in a plowed farm field off of the south side of Waterworks Road.

After being rescued by bystanders, the Evansville Fire Department treated the driver until an ambulance from AMR arrived. The driver was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Cell phone distraction is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash. The driver was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Pursuant to state law regarding crashes involving serious bodily injury or death, Ms. Dejarnett consented to a post-accident blood draw. The investigation will remain open pending toxicology results, which is standard procedure for crashes involving serious bodily injury or death.
