RELEASE NUMBER: 2015-NR-017
CONTACT: Lt. Doug Daza
AUTHORITY: Sheriff David Wedding

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed bank robbery today at the Heritage Federal Credit Union located at 331 East Boonville-New Harmony Rd. Deputies were dispatched to the bank at 1:14pm, arriving on-scene less than five minutes later.

The suspect had pointed a handgun at a teller and asked for money to be placed in a soft-sided cooler. The teller complied and the suspect left the bank. A detailed description of the lone armed-robber and his vehicle was quickly put out and deputies advised Central Dispatch to notify the Indiana State Police as their Evansville Post was in a likely path the suspect might take as he fled.

At 1:25pm First Sgt. Jason Allen with the Indiana State Police advised he had located the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on US 41 south of I-64. The trooper called for assistance and conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle on the lot of the Pilot Station on Warrenton Rd just north of I-64. The driver and sole occupant of the car, Elmer Floyd Wiman, matched the description of the robbery suspect. He was taken into custody without incident. A handgun and a soft-sided cooler were visible in the vehicle.

Wiman was taken to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Command Post and interviewed by detectives. Wiman confessed to the crime, stating he needed the money to avoid his utilities being cut off. He admitted to having cased the bank several weeks prior to today in preparation for the robbery. A search warrant was obtained and a handgun and the stolen currency were recovered. Wiman claimed to be on federal probation for a weapons charge and reportedly has an extensive criminal history which is currently being researched. Wiman was taken into federal custody by special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He will be in federal custody in Henderson, KY and will face federal charges related to the robbery.
